We are a new UK-based film fund, founded in 2024 by Joseph Schull and Harriet Gugenheim, which finances independent documentary films that are socially engaged, creative and cinematic.
We believe storytelling can be a force for good and have backed films that have served as catalysts for change.
Harriet Gugenheim
Director
UK film producer co-founded Placeholder Films to finance and executive produce socially engaged feature documentaries. Notable credits include the investigative project Killing Anna and the 2026 Sundance documentary One in a Million, co-produced alongside BBC Storyville.
Joseph Schull
Co-founder and director of Placeholder Films champions socially engaged independent cinema. He serves as an executive producer and active financier, backing politically impactful, high-profile feature documentaries targeted at international festivals and global broadcast.

As Development and Operations Manager at Placeholder Films, this NFTS graduate is an award-nominated documentary director and cinematographer. Their acclaimed short Two Days on the Interstate was selected for the Telluride Film Festival and nominated for a Grierson Award.
